William Totten was the son of James Totten and Mary Adair Totten. His parents were natives of Ireland who immigrated to New York in the early 1800's. He married Lois Emerette Goodell (Daugther of Rev. Joel Goodell and Elmina Brigham) in Lockport, New York on Oct.1, 1861. Together they had 11 children: Mary Phoebe "Birdie", Milton Goodell, Elmina Rosalie, Hattie Elvira, Edith Estella, Everett, Alice Winifred, Celia, Clarence William, Edna Luella, and Carl Alberti. The family moved from New York to Iowa sometime after 1861 and then on to Washington County, Kansas in 1870 where he remained until his death.
