Eastland, Texas – Former Dist. Judge Burette W. Patterson, 83, brother-in-law of Dr. Jasper Manton of Dallas, died in an Eastland hospital Wednesday after a long illness.
Patterson had resided in Eastland 22 years. Born in Stone County, Ark., he moved with his family to Breckenridge, Texas, in 1879, to Eastland in 1880 and to Cisco in 1881.
Judge Patterson was educated at Baylor University and the University of Texas, and received the LL. B. degree from the latter in 1893.
That September he was appointed city attorney of Cisco and he engaged in the practice of law there until 1910, when he moved to Paul’s Valley, Okla. He returned to Cisco nine
years later.
He served as judge of the 88th District Court of Eastland County from 1933 until the court was abolished in September, 1945.
He was a Baptist, and a member of the Masonic, IOOF and Knights of Pythias lodges.
Judge Patterson was married to Miss Sarah Davies in 1894. Their daughter, now Mrs. Dave P. Carlton of Houston, survives. He was married again in 1936 to Mrs. Helen Manton Grimes. Surviving in addition to his wife and daughter are a stepdaughter, Mrs. V. L. Beakey of Fort Worth and two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Warren of San Angelo and Mrs. Clyde Karkalits of Cisco.
Funeral services will be held at the Eastland First Baptist Church at 4 pm Thursday with the Rev. Harvey Kimbler, pastor, and Dr. Manton, pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Dallas, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
