He was born Johann Jacob Schreyer in Germany, and upon immigrating to Brutus, Michigan, he went by Jacob Schreier. His grandchildren were not aware of a middle name, nor is there American documentation of a middle name, however likely the middle initial "J." was from his first birth name Johann.

Jacob's brother Karl is FindAGrave memorial #206046437. Jacob and his brother Karl immigrated from Germany to Brutus, Michigan. Karl left the area to return back home to Germany, and Jacob's family did not hear from him again. Many years later, Karl's grandson Chris Schrier researched the family and visited Jacob Schreier's descendants in the 1980s.
