He graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1824 and went on to Union Theological Seminary in Prince Edward, Virginia from which he graduated in June 1831. He was ordained by the Orange Presbytery in North Carolina. He pastored several churches in North Carolina and preached equality for black people. He met Lucy Virginia Allen through a mutual friend and they married on 20 November 1834 and were two of the first missionaries in Natal, South Africa, where they served until their retirement in April 1873. They returned to the United States several times during that time on furlough, including the years 1859 and 1873. Their story is told in the book, "The Life and Times of Daniel Lindley 1801-80" by Edwin W. Smith.
