She was the daughter of Orlando Allen and Mary Smith. Her mother died when she was young and her father remarried to a woman, who disliked Lucy. She attended a boarding school in her teen years in Otisco, New York and by September 1832, had joined her brothers in Richmond, Virginia, where she was the governess. She also began Bible classes for the slaves and through this experience decided she wanted to become a missionary. When the Rev. Daniel Lindley passed through the area, a mutual friend introduced them to each other and they married on 20 November 1834 in Hartford, Connecticut. They were two of the first missionaries in Natal, South Africa, where they served until their retirment in April 1873.

The portrait of her was made about 1860. The other includes her with her daughter, Sarah Lindley Mitchell.
