One of seven crew members of the B-17F "Shirley our Girlie," tail No. 42-30319, assigned Shirley our Girlie assigned to the 419th Bomb Squadron of the 301st Bomb Group, downed by flak during a mission over Debrecen, Hungary, on June 2, 1944. Crew members killed were Sgt. Walter F. Bazia, of Illinois; 2nd Lt. Alfred D Bond of Texas, Flight Officer Warren E. DeVilbiss of Ohio, Tech. Sgt. Ray D. May Jr. of Oregon, Flight Officer William M. Metz of Kansas, 2nd Lt. Robert Schratwieser of New York and Sgt. James J. Whitty of Ohio.
