Sunday afternoon this community was shocked by the startling intelligence that Calvin Basim, a respected and well known citizen of Strattansville, had been stricken with paralysis and was dead. The storke came at about six o'clock on Sunday morning and by two in the afternoon Mr. Basim died without regaining consciousness. Mr. Basim was a soldier in the war of the Rebellion, a private in Co. H, 37th Regiment, Eigth Reserve. He enlisted for three years under Capt. Wm. Lemon on April 30th, 1861. He lost a leg in the great battle of Antietam on September 14, 1862, and was discharged during the following December. After his wound healed Mr. Basim took up the burden of active work. He lived on a farm in Clarion township for many years but for the past few years he has lived in the villiage [sic]of Strattaville. Mr. Basim was a man of genial disposition and in spite of his crippled condition he managed to be around among people and to enjoy life as well as any one. He had many firends and was recognized as a man of integrity in all business relations. He had been one of the Directors of the Clarion Fair Assocition[sic] and was always interested in the affairs of the township in which he lived. He married Miss Tillie Stein, of Sumemrville [sic], Pa, who with five children are left to mourn their loss. Mr. Basim was 47 years of age. The funeral occurred from the home on Tuesday, June 5th at two p.m. Interment at Asbury.
