Joseph Carroll, patriarch of the Carroll family, his sons, his sons-in-law, and his extended family members were dedicated to the Patriot cause. His son, Joseph Carroll, Jr. was one of the Heroes who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain (October 7, 1780).
The Daughters of the American Revolution designated his grandfather and namesake, John Carroll, DAR Ancestor Number A206497, and his great grandfather, Joseph Carroll, DAR Ancestor Number A091029. Mr. Carroll's descendants, therefore, are eligible to join the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution. (Lineage of John Carroll [1803 - 1876]: James Carroll [1767 - 1813] > John Carroll [1745 - 1794] > Joseph Carroll [1699 - 1784])
Patriot Joseph Carroll, his wife, Jennet Swansey Carroll, his son, Joseph Carroll, Jr., DAR Ancestor Number A019783, and several other family members were buried in the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The church is the oldest in York County, SC.
Many other Patriots of the American Revolution were buried there as well. Although most people associate South Carolina with the Confederate War, more Revolutionary War battles were fought in South Carolina than in any other state and the Carroll family figured prominently in that conflict. Patriot Carroll and wife's memorials are Find A Grave Memorial# 63294984 and Find A Grave Memorial# 63294997, respectively: that of Joseph Carroll, Jr., Find A Grave Memorial# 13166711 .
