A TRIBUTE: By Freeman N. Hick:
Born March 1, 1881, to June 26, 1979, seems like a long time upon this
earth, it was: 98 years, three months and 26 days. A. H. Crawford, better
known to the multitude of friends as Hawkins Crawford, died June 26, truly
of pioneer stock.
Mr. Crawford was born near Baxter, Tennessee when log cabins were in
style, when times were rough. He not only saw history made in Putnam
County, he helped make history by his community work, leadership in
whichever community he lived and by his church work.
Mr. Crawford raised an exalted family of 10 sons and two daughters. All children were outstanding in their
chosen field of work. He was one of the best carpenters that ever "hit a nail on the head," and tow of his
sons follow the occupation today and are among the best in the business.
He was county surveyor for many years here in Putnam County, and also operated a large dairy farm with
the help of one son who is still farming the family farm in the Union Grove community.
Mr. Crawford not only lived in the Union Grove community, he gave an acre of land on which the present
Union Grove church now stands. He was an faithful Christian, an elder in the United Presbyterian Church
since August 20, 1927.
His church at Union Grove and the sole Presbyterian Church of Middle Tennessee salutes the faithful
leadership for the good work he has done for the cause of Christianity. His leadership, his manual labor
and his gifts of property have been a blessing to the church, to the community, the county and to all
mankind.
Where there be praise, and there is much deserving praise, think on these doings; his renowed family, his
Christian leadership and devotion and a longevity upon the land of Putnam County, Tennessee.
