SILAS O'QUINN, SR., DIES AT 89 YEARS

Pioneer Resident of This Section Passed Away Monday 5:35 P.M. Funeral Tuesday Afternoon

Judge Silas O'Quinn, Sr., eighty-nine years old, died Monday afternoon at 5:35 at his home in east Tifton after nine weeks illness resulting from a fall in his room, when he broke several ribs.

Funeral services will be held at three o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Oak Grove church of which he was a member and which he helped constitute many years ago. Internment will be in the cemetery there.

Rev. George Clark will conduct the funeral services. The pall-bearers will be six grandsons: Ralph O'Quinn, L. S. O'Quinn, Wilmer Bolton, Leon McSwain, Dick Mitchell and Raymond O'Quinn.

Judge O'Quinn was a son of H. D. O'Quinn and was born in Appling County, Georgia, January 15, 1844. His mother died when he was thirteen and his father died in 1906. He enlisted in the Confederate Army soon after the War Between the States started and served in the campaigns in Georgia in the cavalry. After the war he returned to Appling county and engaged in farming and logging on the Altamaha, later following logging operations on the Suwannee river. He moved to Tifton about fifty years ago and was employed by H. H. Tift for many years as blacksmith and other operations of the sawmill here. He lived for a short time at Alapaha(?), but about thirty years ago moved to the Docia district of Tift county, where he resided on a farm until his wife died five years ago. He served for many years as Justice of the Peace for the Docia District.

Judge O'Quinn was twice married, his first wife being Maggie Robinson, of Appling county. To this union four children were born: John O'Quinn, Mrs. Ida Wallis, of Tift county; Marcus O'Quinn, who died at the age of nine years, and Rob O'Quinn, of Tifton. After the death of his first wife, Judge O'Quinn married Catherine Roland, of Lowndes county, who died five years ago. Nine children were born to this union: Gus O'Quinn, who died in 1920; Mrs J.C. Rutland, Cook county; Lamar O'Quinn, Tifton; Dr. A.E. O'Quinn, Tifton; Mrs. Eunie Bolton, Tifton; Walter O'Quinn, who died in 1911; Mrs. Donnie Deese, Tift county; Mrs. Florrie Mitchell, Tallahassee, Fla.; Silas O'Quinn, Jr., Atlanta. One brother, G. N. O'Quinn of M?????? in Berrien county, and one sister, Mrs. Susan Bennett, of Florida also survive. All the living children were here when their father died, except Silas, Jr., who arrived Monday night for the funeral.

Judge O'Quinn was a pioneer resident of Tifton, coming here when the sawmill was about all there was of the town. He had a great host of friends throughout this section among the older residents, and was a man held in highest esteem by all who knew him. Their many friends join in extending sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
