from the Rutland Daily Herald, Sept. 7, 1929:
One more of Rutland county's few remaining Civil war veterans has answered the last bugle call, making the second old soldier from this locality to take his place in the ranks of his deceased comrades during the week.
The latest victim was Garrett Smith, 86, of 35 Stratton road. His "rendezvous with death" was at 12:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home. Mr. Smith served four full years in Company A, 118th New York Infantry, during the Civil war.
He had made his home in Rutland for more than seven years, moving here from New York state, where he was born. Besides his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George A. Shattuck of Greenfield, Mass. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
