Deaths in the District
The following deaths were reported to the health office during the twenty-four hours ending at noon today:
...Laura L. Latham, 19 years; ...
---
This agrees with the date on her gravestone and it also agrees with a 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Washington, D.C. On 8 June, a 17-year-old Laura L. Latham is listed as the niece of Abner O. Latham, 62, at his home in Washington. She and her parents were said to be born in Pennsylvania and her birth is listed as April 1883--the same month as the death of our Laura's mother. Research reveals Abner was actually her paternal grandfather.
As it happened, two days earlier, Lovena[sic] Latham, born Apr 1884[sic] in Pennsylvania, was listed with her maternal grandfather, Aaron Weimer, in Lower Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., Penn. Her aunt Martha "Mattie" Weimer and cousin Bertha Harrington, were also in the home. Bertha's mother had also died.
Ten years earlier, the 1890 U.S. Federal Census lists Atwood P. Latham in the home of his parents, Abner O. and Felicia A. Latham, in Washington, D.C. He was listed as a 29-year-old widower and a physician.
