Tom Gray was one of nine children born to James Zebulon Gray and Sena Ann Sharp. He was the twin brother of Columbus "Lum" W. Gray, the birth year is wrong on Lum's headstone. He first married Golda Spinks on June 25, 1906 on Ohio County, KY. They lived in Ohio County, Kentucky.They had seven children:
Elmer, Delmar, Ethel, Murvil, Darrell, Everett and Theron. All seven children are now deceased.

After he and Golda divorced, he then married Bessie A Bratcher in Beaver Dam, KY. They resided in Daviess County, Kentucky. They had three children.

Tom worked in the coal mines.
