James worked at the courthouse in town, as a janitor. He continued to work there until he died. During the depression he bought a big popcorn machine - on a cart. In the evenings and on weekends, he pushed his cart of popcorn up and down Main Street selling popcorn to the people going into the moviehouse. James is only remembered in his older years. He used to sit on a bench, out on the porch. Their house was located on the top of a hill overlooking Main Street (which Harry & Eliza moved in to after James & Mary died - it's the house I remember and is in all our pictures and my home movies). People remember him sitting out there. When he would sneeze, it could be heard all over the small town. (that's probably why everybody remembers him sitting out there.) One grandson, `Hoot', remembered Christmas with his grandparents was the same every year. They were ALL given a quarter, $.25, all wrapped up with a bow, every Christmas. Towards the end of 1934, they both became quite ill. James was bed-ridden in the bedroom. Mary was bed-ridden in the living room. When James died, they took his body out the bedroom window so Mary wouldn't find out he had died. But, no matter how they tried to cover up his death, she knew and she went into a coma. She never came out of the coma and she died 10 days after her husband, James.
