He was a 1943 graduate of East Aurora High School. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1943 to 1945. Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was owner and president of Schmidt Heating and Cooling of West Seneca. Following retirement he worked at the Fluvanna Avenue Quality Markets. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point. He was a member of West Seneca Chamber of Commerce and was named Citizen of the Year in 1965. He was a 50-year member of the Union Fire Company, Gardenville, having served as chief, president and chaplain. His other memberships include West Seneca Lions Club serving as past president, Boston, N.Y., Lions Club, Kiononia of Jamestown, Boys Scouts of America Cazanovia Council serving as former chairman, Niagara Frontier Builders Association, Ellery Memorial Post 947 VFW, and Thomas G. Stone Post 1996 AMVETS.
He had a passion for singing and was a member of the Buffalo Schwaben Choir and the Schuplatter Verein Edelweiss. He sang at many weddings and funerals, and sang the Nation Anthem at both the former Pilot Field and Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved life, laughing, singing, his friends and family and his Lord. For many years he held an Oktoberfest to benefit the burn unit of Sheehan Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, the former Louise Neuburger, whom he married May 28, 1949; a son, Thomas W. Schmidt of Jamestown; a daughter, Linda Elsasser of Germany; and 12 grandchildren: Matthew Schmidt of Cleveland, Katie and Michael Schmidt, and Christine Shephard, all of Bemus Point, Lindsay Shephard of Syracuse, Matthew Chastain of Athens, Ga., and Vicky, Kim Katy, Kelly, Emely, Maike and Jaemie Elsasser, all of Germany.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Schmidt.
