Charles served as a Private, Company B, 118th Engineer Combat Battalion, 43rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the mechanical treatment of metals and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident in Guadalcanal during the war.
