Dora was the daughter and only child of Rosa (Sauer) and Edward Walker. She was only 9 years old when her father died of tuberculosis. Afterward, Dora and her mother went to live with her mother's sister, Sophia, who was married to her father's brother, Guy. So, Dora was raised with her double cousins, Lloyd, Cecil and Oralee Walker.
She moved from Brunswick, Missouri to Kansas City, Missouri right after her high school graduation. It was there that she met and married Arthur Graham Barnes on December 6, 1947. Their children were George Ray, Frederick Lee, John Arthur and William David.
