IVAN CLESSON HARLAN
Ivan Clesson Harlan, 71, of Janesville, Calif., died at home on Oct. 20, 2008. Ivan was born on June 28, 1937 in Long Pine, Neb., the oldest son of Ivan and Gladys (Harris) Harlan. In 1941, Ivan's father became a traveling evangelist of the Church of God, Seventh Day. In the succeeding years, the family lived in Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, Arkansas and California. Ivan graduated from high school in Lodi, Calif., in 1955. He obtained an associates degree from Delta College in Stockton, Calif., in 1957.

Ivan married Frankie Lou Beech on June 9, 1962 in Fresno, Calif., where they made their home. To this union four children were born: Saundra Sue, Ivan Ross, Robert Frank and Randy Lee.

In 1962, Ivan started his own business, and for three years he owned and operated a service station in Fresno, Calif. In 1965, he began his career as a correctional officer at Tracy, Calif., and moved his family to Stockton. In 1970, Ivan received a transfer to the California Correctional Center in Susanville, where he completed his 30-year career with the department, retiring in 1995.

Ivan enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys. He was also a Little League coach for several years in Janesville. Ivan loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in different sporting events, even traveling to several states to support them.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Frankie; one daughter, Sandy Mitchell, of Baker City, Ore., and two sons, Ivan (Mary) Harlan, of Mountain Home, Idaho, Randy (Kathern) Harlan, of Janesville, Calif., three brothers Keith (Avra) Harlan, of Jamestown, Calif., Kenneth (Brenda) Harlan, of Stockton, Calif., James (Carolyn) Harlan, of Angels Camp, Calif., and one sister Cheryl Guard, of Ritzville, Wash.; two brothers-in-law Elroy Schlenker, of Montpelier, N.D. and Ed Kilgore, of Pocola, Okla.; ten grandchildren Logan, Casey, Sara, Rachel, Kyle, Lane, Madisyn, Ivan, Ross, Garyn and Graceyn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ivan is preceded in death by a son Robert; his parents; two sisters Laura and Bonita, and an infant sister.
