SMALLEY Jack G. S1c USN USS ARIZONA
Smalley, Jack G. Seaman, First Class, Serial No: 311 43 33, US Navy. Jack was born April 22, 1922, son of Vern Smalley and Gladys (Broderson) Smalley. He enlisted in the US Navy April 2, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan and reported for duty on the USS Arizona August 6, 1940. Jack was killed in action on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Purple Heart Medal posthumously. Jack died from wounds received while at his portside anti-aircraft battle station during the attack and he was buried in Plot B, Row 0, Grave 201, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. He is commemorated on the USS Arizona Memorial. Jack was survived by his Father, Mr. Vern Smalley, 2532 Cherry Street, Toledo, Ohio.

NOTE: The above birthdate and age at discharge are as recorded by the Navy. Jack was actually one year younger as he lied about his age when he joined the Navy, so he could be with his brother. Thereafter Jack and his brother Bud C. Smalley were stationed together on the USS Arizona. Fortunately though Bud had recently been transferred off the USS Arizona, prior to the attack. His brother Jack had planned to shortly follow. Again unfortunate, Jack was never able to follow. Interesting fact!
