Large Throng Attends Lyon Obsequies

Military Honors Are Accorded Civil War Veteran

Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, a large number of relatives and friends, including many old neighbors, gathered at Institute hall to pay final tribute to the memory of George Washington Lyon whose 100th birthday anniversary was observed by family and friends on Jan. 27, 1940.

Mr. Lyon appeared to have gone through with the birthday observance without undue tax upon his strength but complained Friday of a pain in the region of his heart. He had in the earlier part of the day visited with callers and told about incidents of the days when serving in the union army.

On account of the heart pain his physician was called and attended him. The end came very suddenly and very peacefully at six o'clock Friday afternoon, Feb. 2, 1940.

The most distressing happening in the latter days of his life was the necessary going to the hospital of his eldest son, C. E. Lyon. He had a premonition that he would never see him again. (more)
