At eighteen Sherman tried out with the St. Louis Cardinals and was signed to a minor league contract. He played for the Fayetteville Angels and the Beaver Falls Browns in 1940 and pitched for the Paragould Browns and the Huntington Aces in 1941.
Flight Officer Sherman was the pilot of B-24L #44-49574, assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 492nd Bombardment Squadron. They where flying a cargo of gasoline from Tezpur India over the Himalayas to Chengtu air base in China when they crashed under unknown circumstances. All aboard were killed.
