The following story is from the Kansas City Times: October 29 1894
Jesse Bolen, 16 year-old son of J.W. Bolen, city collector for the Laring-Harriss Coal Company, and nephew of James A. Bolen of the Bolen Coal Company, was killed by a Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis wrecking train near Olathe, Kan., yesterday afternoon.
Young Bolen lived with his mother and father , and two little sisters at 3131 Neville street and was a student at one of the public schools. Saturday morning he went out to see a freight train which had been wrecked near Olathe Kan. About 2 o'clock he climbed between two cars of the wrecking train to ride home. A sudden jerk threw him under the car wheels, which passed across his hips, severing both legs from his body. His head and face were bruised and disfigured beyond recognition. The body was moved to Cariat's undertaking establishment, where the funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Less than a year ago a 14 year old sister of the deceased was burned to death through the explosion of a lamp in her hand.
