Bernard served as a Corporal, Battery E, 59th Coast Artillery Regiment (Habor Defense), Coast Artillery Corps, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Richardson County, Nebraska prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Coast Artillery Corps on August 31, 1940, prior to the war, at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Carpenter and also as Single, without dependents.

Bernard became a POW of the Japanese Army during the "Fall Of the Philippines" in 1942.

He "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army at Hoten Pow Camp, Mukden, Manchuria 42-123 (China) during the war.

He was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in the Hoten POW Camp in China and was repatriated here on February 3, 1949.
