Mrs. C. C. Viall Dies At Her Mentor Ave. Home
Mrs. Ada Eliza Osborn Viall, 83, of 368 Mentor Ave., member of a pioneer Western Reserve family and long one of Painesville's most prominent residents, died at 5 a.m. today at her home following a lingering illness. Born in Lake county June 25, 1860, she had spent most of her life here.
With her husband, the late Christopher Colson Viall, prominent Cleveland banker and broker, to whom she was married Nov. 10, 1880, she long was a leader in Painesville's social and civil life. Of recent years, however, she had not been active, and had turned more and more to music and genealogy, her hobbies. She had studied music at Wellesley College, of which she was a graduate.
She was a member of St. James Episcopal church, where she once had sung in the choir. In addition, she was the last surviving charter member of the New Connecticut Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, which was formed here in 1897; had been active in the Monday club of Painesville, the Colonial Dames, Descendents of the Mayflower, and the Magna Carta.
Her activities included membership on the first board of the Painesville Library Assn., which was formed in 1898. She served for several years.
Through her husband, she was a member of the exclusive Union Club of Cleveland and of the Country Club of Cleveland.
Mrs. Viall was a member of the Osborn family, two members of which, Nathaniel Sampson Osborn and his younger brother, Abial, went to California in 1849 at the time of the gold rush. Nathaniel married Martha Webster of Madison, and returning, settled in Chardon. Abial, who had stayed in California, later came to Painesville where he met and married Caroline Amelia Brooks.
Mrs. Viall was the daughter of Abial and his wife.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth of Milwaukee, who was expected to arrive here today; two grandsons, Lieut. Kenneth Viall, U.S.N., of Sanford, Fla., who saw action on the U.S.S. San Francisco, and who now is a Navy Air Corps instructor, and David Osborn Viall, of Milwaukee; and three granddaughters; Joanne V., Gertrude Osborn and Marjorie Ann Viall, all of Milwaukee. Another son, Philip Osborn Viall, of Rochester, N. Y. preceded her in death.
Services will be conducted for Mrs. Viall at her home Saturday at 2:20 p.m. Rev. Dayton B. Wright, rector of St. James'. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
