Mrs. Gertrude A. "Gertie" Fenlong, 78, of 408 County Route 38, passed away Tuesday afternoon (June 2, 2009) at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center, Burlington, Vermont, where she had been a patient since May 19th.

She was born July 8, 1930 in Watertown, the daughter of John H. and Arlene M. Keller Ward. She graduated from Massena High School in 1947. Gertie married Vernal F. Fenlong on June 27, 1953 in Massena. He predeceased her on August 14, 1979.

Mrs. Fenlong worked in the cafeteria at Alcoa for several years. When she was younger, she enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. She also enjoyed reading, knitting, and spending time with her family. She was also a collector of "frogs".

She is survived by five children, Frances A. Fenlong, Massena, Clifford Fenlong, Michigan, Shirley J. Fenlong, Chase Mills, Vern G. Fenlong and his wife, Lois, Louisville and William J. Fenlong and his wife, Angele, Rhode Island; three stepchildren, Howard Fenlong and his wife, North Carolina, Carol Hawkins, Rome and Donna Briggs and her husband, Dick, Florida; 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Ruth Ward, Massena; and many nieces and nephews.

Gertie was predeceased by a stepson, Robert in 2000; and two sisters, Helen M. Carrier on May 29, 2002 and Arlene Rosalie Ward on December 25, 1946.

Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Donald Manfred, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
