Augusta was born in the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, Montana. The family home was Virgile, Montana on the Missouri River until Alta Moody died. Augusta and younger siblings went to the Catholic orphanage in Great Falls where Bertha and Frances were adopted by the Gleasons from Mildred, Montana. The remaining children lived at the orphanage and received their education there. When Augusta was 19 she went to Mildred to visit her two young sisters and while there she met her future husband, Paul David Vance. She and Paul had eight children; two set of twins.
