LEON PATE TEMPERS HIS HAWAIIAN SALADMASTER SALES WITH VOLUNTEER SERVICES AS A PROBATION OFFICER

"We wish to convey our sincere appreciations for your service to the Judiciary of Hawaii. You have made an important and meaningful contribution to our judicial system which flourishes on citizen aid. We are hopeful that in the coming years you will continue to maintain an active interest in this state's administration of justice."

The above citation is but one of several given to Hawaiian Saladmaster Dealer in Divisional Director Conrado Venzon's Division, Leon Pate was selling real estate in Hawaii at the time he spied a recruiting ad placed by Venzon in a Honolulu newspaper.

"His Hobby was cooking," Venzon remembered, "and he thought it would be natural for him to work and have his hobby at the same time. Not only is he a salesman par excellence, but he has other talents as well. For five years he worked as a radio announcer for one of our most prominent stations in Hawaii. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years, rising to the rating of Chief Boatswain's Mate. He also spent
eight years in the Merchant Marine where he is a rated first mate."

"Leon is a full-time Saladmaster man," Venzon continued, "but he still has time to spare for humanitarian endeavor. He volunteered as a counselor aide to the District Court, State of Hawaii, and became the Deputy Chief Counselor Aide about a year ago. He receives no salary, only expenses."

"As a probation officer, Leon has been involved in helping rehabilitate people convicted of felonies. He says his reward for his time and efforts is the wonderful feeling of seeing one of his own proteges 'make it'." Taken from The Saladmaster News, published monthly 1973
