According to his pension application file, Richard King served in the Revolutionary War, first as a substitute for his father, Drury King. He served under Generals Lincolnton and Greene and fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.

Richard first married Rebecca Martin (marriage bond dated 17 December 1781). His bondsman was David Williams. They had two known children, Richard, born 1790 and Ailey (1794-1870). Ailey first married Wilson Hadaway (1794-1813) and they had one child, William. Her second husband was James Huckaby (1795-?).
