Jay County lad drowns in Amishville lake

Adams County's second drowning in 48 hours occurred Friday evening when a Jay County boy, Kenneth Allen Adair, age 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adair of Route 3, Portland, drowned at the lake in Amishville, U.S.A., which is located approximately four miles southeast of Berne. The tragedy occurred at approximately 8 p.m.

An Adams County man, Jack Edward Robinette, Sr., 38 of Route 2, Berne, answering his son's call for help, drowned last Wednesday evening in Mullin Pond, located on the Tile Mill Road just east of Berne.

Camping

The Adair boy was camping with relatives at Amishville, a tourist attraction, and was in the lake, near the dock, according to witnesses, when the drowning took place. The boy's body was later recovered approximately 20 minutes later in 13-foot of water.

It was reported that the Adair boy, who was a sophomore at Portland High School last fall, had gone swimming with his cousin, Frances Adair, and the girl called for help.

Another boy swimming at the lake, Garry Manning, 19, of Bluffton, rescued the girl, but the Adair youth drowned as he apparently went to aid his cousin. Witnesses said that Kenneth went down into the water, and never came up.

It was reported that the boy could not swim.

Surviving are the parents, one brother and three sisters. Friends may call at the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in Portland after noon today. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
