SHAW, CAREY
Carey Shaw, of Houston, has for the last thirty-five years been prominently identified with the banking, real estate, railroad and general business affairs of Southeast Texas. At the beginning of his career he was a bookkeeper, and is now one of the principal factors in the varied business life of this part of the state.
He was born near Columbus, in Colorado county, Texas, December 1, 1854. His parents were Col. Josiah and Delinda Jane (Fitzgerald) Shaw, his father a native of Shelby county, Kentucky, and his mother of Nashville, Tennessee. The family has lived in Texas from the time of the establishment of the Republic, the father having come to the state in 1836 and settled in Fayette County, near the town of Lyons, now Schulenburg.
Carey Shaw lived at home on his father's plantation until seventeen, and then went to work in a general mercantile store at Columbus, for eight dollars a month. He had received a private school education, and later attended Soule's College in New Orleans, where he was graduated in June, 1873. He then took up general accounting and bookkeeping. Since March 1, 1876, to the present time he has been identified with the Simpson Bank of Columbus, being now vice president.
In 1888, with Mr. French Simpson as partner, he organized the Lavaca Bank at Halletsville, this being now the Lavaca County National Bank. In 1906 Mr. Shaw moved his home from Columbus to Houston and in July of that year organized the National City Bank. He was cashier at first, subsequently vice president, and retained his connection with the institution until January, 1909, when he sold his interests, and since then he has been largely engaged in the buying and selling of Texas lands.
Mr. Shaw is also to be mentioned among the railroad builders of Southeast Texas. He is president of the Provident Railway Company, which is now engaged in the construction of a line through Wharton and Lavaca counties from Glen Flora to Halletsville. The road will eventually be extended through additional territory. Kansas City capital is largely invested in this enterprise.
At Columbus, where he resided so many years, Mr. Shaw took an active interest in local Democratic politics. He served as city treasurer for twenty years, up to 1906, having been at first appointed to the office and subsequently elected without opposition. He is a past master of Caledonia Lodge and a member of Holland Lodge, No. 1, A. F. & A. M.; has filled all the chairs in Live Oak Lodge, No. 58, K. of P., at Columbus, and is a member of the Knights and Ladies of Honor and of the Sons of Herrmann.
He married, October 14, 1879, Miss Zulika Byars, a daughter of Dr. William Byars, of Columbus. She died in 1886, leaving one son, Lillius Darden, who is now cashier of the Simpson Bank of Columbus. His present wife, whom he married January 18, 1900, was Miss Erie Green, whose father was Dr. Rowan Green, of Columbus. By this marriage there is one son, Carey Cook Shaw, aged five. The family home is at 2700 Fannin street, Houston. (Historical Review of South-East Texas and the Founders, Leaders and Representative Men, Vol 2, by Dermot Hardy and Maj. Ingham S. Robert, by The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1910 )
