Robert served as a Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class on PB4Y-2 patrol bomber (#59553), Crew #3, US Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB-119, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Somersworth, Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Robert was "Killed In Action" when his PB4Y-2, which was flying cover during the rescue operation of Lt. F. D. Murphy, crashed for an unknown reason over the LuiChou peninsula, China during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross".
