Census records and marriage records give his parents as John J. Childers and either Prudence Richards Childers (his birth mother) or Sarah Ann Stutler Childers (his step-mother who raised him from age 5). The death certificate lists his parents as Simon Childers and Susan Robinson, neither of whom could be verified as even existing anywhere in West Virginia between 1850 - 1900. Also, the informant Delph Childers' identification could not be established. The only name close was Delphia Davis Childers, wife of Lewis Childers who was a son of Frank Childers. No relationship to Reuben Dudley Childers could be found. Since no other Reuben D. Childers could be found, I assume that his death certificate is in error -- Dan Myer

New Info from Kelly Keifer Cappell: "I think the informant on Reuben's death certificate is Dolph Childers, which is short for Rudolph, his son. In the 1920-1940 census he is listed as Dolph and in the prior ones he is listed as Rudolph."
The Delph Childers listed on the death certificate may, in fact, be Dolph Childers. But that still does not clarify the parentage of Reuben Childers. I am still inclined to believe the census & marriage records since Reuben gave the info for the marriage record and his parents gave the info for the census records.

The following info was provided by Kelly Keifer Cappell, findagrave contributor 47465446:

Reuben Dudley Childers was the second husband of my 2nd great-grandmother, Sarah E. Snider. She married Reuben 10 years after her 1st husband, James F Bowen (not Brown) died. Sarah and James had only one child, my great-grandmother. She and Reuben did not have any children. Sarah and Reuben moved out west with Sarah's daughter, Lucy and the marriage did not last long. Sarah and Reuben were divorced before 1906 and Sarah and Lucy returned to WV. In the 1910 census, Reuben was remarried and living in Hayes, Reno Co., KS. His wife was Isabell and they are listed as having been married for 4 years.

Reuben's death certificate says his date of birth was 16 Apr 1843 but his grave says 9 Jan 1843. The 1900 census also gives his birth as Jan 1843. He was born in Harrison Co., WV. His marriage records also indicate his date of birth was in Jan 1843.
