Sgt. James Merriwether Killed In Pacific Area
Mobile Register (Mobile, Alabama)
14 October 1945

Sgt. James Merriwether, son of Mrs. Alice Merriwether, Grand Bay, was killed in action in the Pacific, according to a press release received from the War Department Saturday.

Sergeant, US Army Air Forces, WWII.
875th Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group
Purple Heart recipient, World War II Honor Roll

James was originally buried at the 27th Division Cemetery on Saipan and reinterred in Hawaii on 17 Jun 1949. The last Japanese air attack on Saipan was conducted on 2 Jan 1945, when a single Japanese aircraft destroyed one B-29 and damaged another three. It is possible that James was wounded in this attacked and died of his injuries the next day, though TMSI has no information on this.
