SFC Justin Alfred Petersen, stationed as a Green Beret at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado, assigned to the 2nd Battalion 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Justin was a native of Rock Springs and graduated from Rock Springs High School in 2000. He enlisted in the Army in June 2000 as a combat engineer. He earned his Green Beret in 2007 and became a special forces engineer sergeant. His military education included Basic and Individual Training, Basic Airborne School, Combat Life Savers Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Warrior Leaders Course, Survival, Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE-High Risk) Course and the Special Forces Qualification Course. His awards included the Army Commendation Medal, with three oak leaf clusters; Army Achievement Medal, with one oak leaf; Valorous Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Army Good Conduct Medal, with three knots; and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal. His decorations included the Special Forces Tab; Parachutist Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal, with two Bronze Service Stars; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, with numeral two; Army Service Ribbon; and the Overseas Service Ribbon, with numeral three. His duty stations included Fort Carson, Giessen Army Depot, Germany, Wiesbaden, Germany and Fort Bragg, N.C. He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, from May 2003 to July 2004 and from March 2007 to October 2007. Justin died Thursday, May 28, 2009, from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Survivors include his wife, Svetlana; son, Michael; mother and stepfather, Julie Dorigatti and Patrick; one brother, Danniel Peterson; one sister, Amie Antonino; grandparents, Alfred and Helen Petersen; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Larisa and Johannes Gauzel; and brother-in-law, Alexander Gauzel. Funeral services were conducted June 6, 2009, at the SS. Cyril and Methodius Church, 633 Bridger Ave., Rock Springs. A parish rosary was recited on June 5, 2009, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 116 Broadway, Rock Springs. Military graveside services and interment was in the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.
