According to the 1940 census, he was living in Derry, Sierra County, New Mexico in 1935. That 1940 census shows him as aged 15 living with an uncle Aaron Johnson, and an aunt Ida Johnson, and two cousins in JP6 Cooke County, Texas. Enlisted in the US Marine Corps on 4 November 1942 at Dallas, Texas, the day before his eighteenth birthday, and listed his brother, Mr. Alfred Reed, 1124 N. Dixon St., Gainesville, Texas, as his next of kin contact (His home was listed as Clyde, Texas). He was then sent to a Casual Company of the Recruit Depot, Marine Corps Base, San Diego, California. After some training he was a guard at the Mojave Naval Air Station in early 1943, from there he went in July 1943 to the Infantry Training Center at Camp Elliott, San Diego. In October of 1943 he was sent to the 24th Marines in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California. Shipped out to the south Pacific with the Fleet Marine Force in January 1944.

Private First Class Henry F. Martin 488315 US Marine Corps Company L 3rd Battalion 24th Marines Regiment 4th Marine Division, FMF. During 1944, 3rd Battalion 24th Marines were deployed to the Marshall Islands and participated in the Battles of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, Roi Namur, and Iwo Jima. On Saipan, Marianas Islands, 16 June 1944, the men in Pfc Martin's group were killed by Japanese fire from three dugouts, Pfc Martin fought a single-handed battle and, by his valiant determination, succeeded in cleaning out the treacherous enemy positions and in killing five of the hostile force. He gallantly gave his life for his country. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1949 his remains were reinterred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii on 25 February 1949.
