He was raised most of his life in Dahlgren, Illinois where he started his career with the railroad. Starting in 1898 he worked as a member of a repair crew. Eventually he got a job as a freight agent in Chicago Heights along with his brother John King Mitchell.
In July 1912 he married Ethel J. Somes, whom he had met at a New Years Eve party 7 months prior.
They were the parents of 4 children, Warren, George A., Joyce, and Arlene. With 3 surviving to adulthood.
By the time of his death in 1956 he was a livestock agent in Chicago.
