He married (1) Elizabeth Jane Bell on 14 Nov 1860 in Adams Co., OH.
Thomas served as a corporal and sergeant in Company I, 91st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War from 9 Aug 1862 until 24 Jun 1865. His occupation at enlistment was "boatman." Thomas is described in his military records as being 5'8" tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.
After the war, he & Elizabeth had two daughters, Harriet Belle ("Hattie"), who married Otis Kent; and Martha Ellen ("Mattie"). Between 1870 & 1880 they moved to Huntington, WV, according to his pension papers, where they lived for about fifteen years. The family moved to Los Angeles in the 1880's. Thomas was a building contractor.
Elizabeth died in 1900 and, in 1902, Thomas married (2) Amanda Barstow Walls. Thomas & Amanda separated before his death and she moved back East to MA.
He died at the Old Soldier's Home in Los Angeles. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery (Lot W½80, Section G) on 24 Sept 1917. There is a gravestone for Elizabeth; however, while there is not a specifically marked stone for Thomas standing (1988), there is a stone marked "father" which is probably the place of his burial.
