The following obituary and Joanna's grave marker indicate she was born in December 1816. However, the family record in the Bible of her brother Josiah and his grave marker give his birthdate as July 15, 1816. This is not possible. The conflict has not been resolved.

DIED
At her late residence in this city, on Sunday, August 21, 1887, Mrs. Joanna Coughanowr, wife of H. W. Coughanowr, in the 71st year of her age.
Joanna Powell was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1816; was married to H. W. Coughanowr January 14, 1836. Two years after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Coughanowr removed from Pennsylvania to Lebanon Ohio, in 1838, afterward to Paris, this State, and thence to this city in 1865.
Mrs. Coughanowr united with the Baptist church in 1842, and from that time until her death lived a consistent, Christian life. She was of retiring disposition, though ever on the alert to perform any good work assigned her, or to visit the sick and relieve the distressed. Her acquaintances were all friends. She had no enemies; in church work and works of charity she was ever faithful, discharging her duties concientously in the sight of God.
The golden wedding of this highly esteemed couple was celebrated January 14, 1886. The occasion was a joyous one, for no residents of our city were ever more sincerely loved and respected than they. For nearly fifty-two years they enjoyed each other's society, and we doubt not their entire married life had much more sunshine than shadow in it.
Full of years, well beloved, and conscious that the duties of her long life had been well performed, Mrs. Coughanowr gladly entered the presence of her Lord. Her death was peaceful. She had passed uncomplainingly through months of pain. She never murmured, even when she knew that her life was ebbing swiftly away. Patient, submissive and meek, she was a bright example of true Christianity.
There are none who do not sympathize with the bereft husband. He has lost almost all there was for him on earth, and his chief consolation is that it will not be long until he shall rejoin the wife of his youth, the partner of his joys and sorrows, in that beautiful land where pain and sorrow are not, and where partings are no more.
The remains were followed to Oakland Cemetery by a large concourse of mouring and sympathizing friends, and laid to rest until the trump of God shall summon them to life everlasting. Her body is lost to our view but her memory will linger with us.

Note: Mother of Joanna was Margaret Powell, friend of Abraham Good. She was the daughter of Edward and Mary Kehler/Keller) Powell, of Lancaster, Pa. She died in 1821 and is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave next to Abraham Good in Zeltenreich cemetery. (Lancaster County will book N1-22)
