REV. AND MRS. EARLY ROSE - McCLURE, VIRGINIA
OUR OLD PEOPLE
by HAMPTON OSBORNE
REV. Rose was born April 15, 1905, at Leck, Virginia. His parents were John F. and Phoebe French Rose.
His first school was taught by Elder John McCoy at Pilot Knob School. Other teachers there were Alva Smith and Oma Bise. This was a log building with split log benches, no back support, and a wood-burning stove for heat. While attending this school, he had the misfortune to get a leg broke. The teacher had to take down the door and lay him on it and carry him home on it with the help of the larger boys. He finished the seventh grade.
He worked for Scott and Trinkle Construction Company while building the road from Nora up Sandy Ridge to the head of Tom's Creek. He worked at this job about one year.
He married Amie Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Baker, May 28, 1928. She first attended school at the old Clintwood High School which stood above the Courthouse where the log building now stands. Her teachers there were Val Hylton, _____ Countiss, and Mrs. _____ Kennedy. She finished the seventh grade under Mrs. Beuna Smith at Pilot Knob, a plank school house. While attending the old Clintwood school, the school was moved into the new Memorial High School about 1918.
REV. Rose also worked for W. M. Ritter Lumber Co., for about 16 years. He worked for some time as a section foreman for Clinchfield Railroad Company. For about eight years he was contractor for hauling coal from the mines to a shipping dock. His truck once turned over and landed in a hole of water and when the truck was pulled out by means of a wrecker, they found a large catfish had been caught in the truck. That was a rather costly way to fish.
REV. Rose's brothers were: Charlie, Daniel, and Edd, all deceased. His sisters are Mrs. Lillie McClain, Mrs. Alpha Stanley, Mrs. Flora Rose, Mrs. Belle Hale, Mrs. Lula Rose and Miss Clara Rose. All are deceased except Flora and Lillie who live together at McClure.
Mrs. Rose's half-brothers are Phillip and Trigg. These were by Mr. Baker's first wife, Jane Fleming. Her brothers are Dewey and Omo, who is her twin brother. One sister died in infancy. Her father was Johnny Baker and her mother was Samanthia Palestine "Tina" Mullins, daughter of Elder and Mrs. Andy Mullins. Her mother had a twin sister, Sarah Emaline.
Her grandfather, Elder Andy Mullins, and Mrs. Mullins had 10 children. Elder Mullins out-lived his wife and eight of his children. He died several years ago at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Beldon Fleming, near Flemingtown.
Mrs. Rose has been a member of The Freewill Baptist Church for 35 years. At present she is a member of Dyer's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
REV. Rose was first a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church, but now is a member of Dyer's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He was baptized by Elder Bert Nowlin. He has been in the ministry for 18 years.
To the union of REV. and Mrs. Rose were born the following children:
Darrell, first married June Rose. They had no children. He served 18 months in the Korean War. He next married Pattie McClain. Their children are Timothy and Sharon. He next married June Wood. They have no children. They live in Abingdon, Virginia.
Jack, married Edith Carlton. Their children are Dennis, Brenda, and Danny. They live in Maryland.
Donald "Demp", married Cynthia Mann. Their children are Pamela, Mary Ellen, and Donald "Don." They live in McClure.
Virgil, married Genette Moran. Their children are Carol, Chris, and David. They live in Davidsonville, Maryland.
Brady "Brad", married Charlotte Carlton (sister of Jack's wife). Their children are Bradley "Brad" and Shanon "Sissy". Brady served 18 months in Vietnam, but is now out of service. They live at Herndon, Virginia.
I have known REV. and Mrs. Rose and their families for many years and have shared their fine Christian hospitality in their home many times. Many more good years to you, REV. and Mrs. Rose.
