Cashmere Pioneer Passes In Sleep
Mary Beam one of Cashmere's oldest and most beloved pioneers passed away in her sleep Friday having reached tho age of 76 years. Mrs. Beam was born in the state of Texas February 5, 1874. She came to the state of Washington in 1880 in a covered wagon with her parents settling near Bickleton in Klickitat county and lived there until 1887 when she came with her parents to the Cashmere Valley, then known as Old Mission and settled on a ranch up Briskey Canyon, the canyon being named for her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Briskey.
She was married to George Beam June 26, 1896 at Rossland, B. C. and following their marriage the couple made their homo in Rossland three years. They then returned to Cashmere and this has since been her home. During her early life she experienced many hardships and tragedies, one which took her mother's life in a snows slide and in which she herself was involved, but lived to tell others about it.
Mr. Beam passed away in 1930. Following his death, Mrs. Beam continued to make her home on the old family ranch in Briskey Canyon.
Funeral services for Mrs. Beam were conducted Monday afternoon from the Kuelbs & Braun Funeral Chapel with Gary France officiating at the services. During the services Berm Simpson sang accompanied by Clara Erickson. Interment took place in the old Briskey-Treadwell cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers: Pete Brender, Jess Brender, Bart Brender, Richard Pratt, Raymond Van Gilder and Jess Mercer.
Mrs. Beam leaves one daughter, Mrs. Clell Howard of Wenatchee, one son, Norman Beam of Okanogan, four grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Carl Thueson of Everett, Mrs. Pat Lee of Cashmere and Mrs. Earl Fimpel of Portland, Ore., two brothers, Dave Briskey of Leavenworth and John Briskey of Mt. Vernon, Wash.
