Superintendent of the Ivanhoe Paper Mill in Paterson. He also manufactured patent medicines. Abolitionist poet and vice president of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Poems include "Old John Brown" and "A Battle-Cry." Also founded a temperance society in Paterson.
