Actress. Evelyn Baldwin attended a charity event at the Astor Hotel in New York City when she was about sixteen or seventeen years old. The guest of honor was D.W. Griffith, a famous director of silent films. It was said that when he entered the room his eyes fell upon Evelyn who was sitting next to her mother, Sarah C. Baldwin. He walked back and forth passed her to see her at all angles, both near and far. He approached where she sat and said, "You're Little Nell." He said that he was going to make Dickens' Old Curiosty Shop and wanted her to play the role of Little Nell. Through this accidental meeting with D.W. Griffith, Evelyn became an actress of both silent films and the theater. One of D.W. Griffith's later productions "The Struggle" which met with mixed reviews during that time period, starred Hal Skelly & Zita Johann as the older couple, with Evelyn Baldwin & Jackson Halliday as the younger couple.
