Came from Virginia soon after the Texas annexation. He at once took rank among the state's prominent lawyers, who were by majority living in Huntsville at that time. During the War between the States, Branch raised and led Company A, 21st Texas Cavalry Regiment. He was elected to the Confederate Congress in 1863 and served in that capacity until the end of the war. In 1866 he was elected Congressman but; the US Congress wouldn't seat him because of his Confederate service. The following year the Yellow Fever epidemic claimed over a tenth of the people of Huntsville in a matter of weeks. Anthony Branch was among these victims, dying on October 3rd 1867.
