On Jan21, 1951, while training at Togam-ni, South Korea a Hand Grenade prematurely exploded killing him. Lt Higgins was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
