Seven miles southwest of Stroudsburg, PA in Cherry Valley, is a granite memorial to Phillip Bossert/Bossard, an early settler (1745) from Alsace, Germany. He helped to lay the foundations of civilization on the frontier. He made his home a refuge for his neighbors fleeing from Indian attacks during the French and Indian War, notably in April-June, 1757. He donated a portion of his land for a school and church. The Christ Church, Hamilton Square, was erected on his land; and his body lies in its cemetery--- a new tombstone placed by descendants in 1966. (Info from Monroe Co. Historical Society)
