In 1800 Jacob graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in New Jersey with a degree in Theology and was licensed to preach that same year by the Presbytery. From about 1803 to 1809 he was a pastor in Washington County, Ohio, having established the Pioneer Presbyterian Church there. Rufus Putnam and Manassah Cutler of the Ohio Company of Associates founded the Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, but Jacob served as its first President and Preceptor from 1809-1822. He was also the college's first and only professor when its doors opened in October 1808 with 3 students. In 1826 due to financial difficulties at the college, it seemed that someone had to be dropped from the faculty and the vote of the Trustees went against Jacob, although he continued as a Trustee. He also no doubt had a farm during his years in Ohio and managed that along with his college duties. More can be found about Ohio University in the book "The History of Ohio University" by Thomas Nathanael Hoover @ 1954. After his tenure at Ohio University, he served as a pastor of churches in Ohio, Virginia and Mississippi. In 1838, while in Mississippi, he became the first principal and one of the professors of the Pontotoc Female Academy, which became Chickasaw College and was a school for Christian education for girls. In 1853, the Presbyterian Conference agreed to take over this academy from the town and renamed it Presbyterial Female Collegiate Institution of Pontotoc. Also in 1853, Ohio University bestowed upon Jacob a honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He married Hannah Dickey circa September 1800 and they had 9 children. The two not listed below are: Caroline (b. circa 1805 and married Albert Jones) and Tartus (d. 1856 and served in the Mexican War).
