James is the second son of James Dow Hays and Jane Cole. His siblings were; John, (1832-), Martha, (1837-1896), Mary, (1839-1915), William Henry Harrison, (1841-1911), and Jane, (1844-).
Family stories have been; James saved the family from starvation by lifting a heavy chest of corn and hiding it in a cave so maraders didn't find it. The next day he joined the Union. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He served in the MO. state militia. He was a private in Company K of the 5th Mo. Calvary. He enlisted on Sept 1863 and discharged on Apr 1865.
A granddaughter recounted as a child playing with a trunk of "play" money in a chest in the attic. (This was assumed to be Confederate money.) He was robbed and stabbed in Arlington after floating ties down the river to Prescott for sale. He died a few days later.
He first married Martha Jane Whitehead on Apr 27 1856 in Texas Co. MO. They had six children; Mary Jane,(1856-1929), Martha Sarah E., (1868-1901), Elizabeth A., Jasper Henry, and Mally. Martha Jane died on 12 Jun 1875).

James then married Virginia Givens on 3 Jul 1877. They had eleven children; Charles Arthur, John Alfred, Samuel Allen, J. Frank, Loranzo Dow, Phillip Sheridan, Ulysses Grant, Thomas Sherman, Myrtle Inez, Steve, Edward, and Floyd Erwin.
