Funeral services for Robert James (Bobby) Bowman, 61, of Fort Lauderdale, Fl., and formerly of the Bluefield area who was a famous major league baseball pitcher of approximately 30 years ago, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Montcalm Methodist Church with Rev. J.D. Clark and Rev. Dewey Lacy officiating.
Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bluewell.
Bowman died Monday night, September 4, 1972 in Bluefield Sanitarium.
The former baseball player and manager had been living in Fort Lauderdale for the last 12 years and was employed by the city's municipal recreation department.
He came to Bluefield about two months ago to take care of some business affairs and became ill before he could return home.
Born October 3, 1910 in Keystone, a son of Chester and Victoria Dixon Bowman, he and his family lived at Montcalm for many years He grew up in the Mercer County area and was widely known in baseball circles before he went to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1940 and to immediate stardom. He led the National League pitchers in earned run average during his rookie season and appeared in a then-record 51 games as a starter and relief pitcher.
Following his years with the Cardinals, he played for the New York Giants and then the Chicago Cubs. He finished his professional career as a player-coach for the old Bluefield pennant-winning team managed by Ernie White.
His first wife, the former Miss Beulah Evans of Montcalm, preceded him in death in 1958.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marian Bowman of Fort Lauderdale; one daughter, Mrs. Robert L. (Mary Jane) Stephen of Denver, Co.; one son, Robert James Bowman, Jr. of Lakeland, Fl.,; four brothers, William B. Bowman and Samuel Bowman both of Columbus, Oh. , Joe Bowman of New Port Richey, Fl., and J. Newton Bowman of Clinton, Tn.; and two grandchildren.
The body is at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield where friends may call today from 5 to 9 p.m.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
