Seaman Second Class Graham was one of 58 crew killed in action when U.S.S. Laffey (DD-459) was sunk during the Battle of Guadalcanal, November 13, 1942. The destroyer took on a superior Japanese fleet at point-blank range, machine-gunning the bridge of a battleship and sinking two enemy destroyers before being sunk by point-blank return fire and a torpedo hit.
