"Upon his return, he [Henry Gunning) married the youngest daughter of the widow Aultem, of this city. His wife was the perfect picture of health, a short plump muscular little woman, of most symmetrical form, one who looked as if she would live to be one hundred years age. In proper time, she became a mother. She did not speedily recover from her confinement and never regained her accustomed health. Again she became a mother and soon afterwards died."
The two children referred to are Gus and William. She probably died the same year that William was born (February 1869) as she does not appear in the 1870 Howard County census with Henry and the two boys. The mortality index for those persons who died during the year ending the 1st of June 1870 in Center township, county of Howard show that a Cassia Gunning, age 18, female, white, married, died in January of lung fever. She was keeping house. It is probable that Cassie Gunning was our Catherine.
